2012 Torrington Hall of Fame # 6. Newell Porch.

While an outstanding athlete at Kennedy High School in the sports of swimming, baseball and football, Newell Porch left his mark on THS sports’ history as a coach and athletic director. 
His coaching resume at THS includes:
· 1973 to 1989, Boys Head Swim Coach. Three League titles and two-time State runner-up
· 1973 to 1988, Assistant Football Coach (Defensive Coordinator). Two League titles. Runner –up State Class L Championship game.
· 1988 to 2002, Girls’ Swim team Head Coach. Two League titles, two times runner-up in State meet. Selected CHSCA Coach of the Year for Girls’ Swimming.
· 1985 to 1989, Girls’ Tennis Head Coach. Restarted the girls’ tennis program. Runner-up League champs.
· 1990 to 2007, Boys’ Tennis Head Coach. Eleven League titles, nine undefeated seasons, nominated eight times as CHSCA Coach of the Year.
From 2005 to 2010, Newell was a health teacher, physical education teacher, and Athletic Director at Torrington High School. During this time he served as NVL Sports Chair for boys’ and girls’ tennis and boys’ swimming. He was vice-president of the NVL and a member of its protest committee.  At one time he was the liaison between principals and NVL athletic directors. He was a member of the CIAC Sportsmanship Committee and helped organize the NVL’s initiative for sportsmanship.
Newell currently works  as an Athletic Director at Avon High School.. He resides in Torrington with his wife Patty.
