As Japanese bombers unleashed their history changing arsenal at Pearl Harbor, career Navy man Thomas Reeves stayed on the USS California and continued to supply ammunition and defend the ship before succumbing.

Reeves, a Thomaston resident, earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for his gallant effort and is buried in Punch Bowl Cemetery above Pearl Harbor. It is the sacrifice of soldiers like Reeves that allow us to hold our picnics and watch our games.

We thank all that served and all who paid the supreme sacrifice. Happy Memorial Day.

As the crowning of league champions continues, hats off to the Northwestern Regional softball team on clinching at least a share of the BL softball title Saturday with a 4-3 win over Nonnewaug.

Coach Stacey Zematis’ team has now won three of the last four league crowns and four in school history, before that winning in 1994. Zematis has been part of all four, the first one as a player.  Call is that Williams’ pedigree. For those who don’t’ know, Stacey is the daughter of Highlander coaching legend Fred Williams.

Hats off to the NVL decision-makers on holding off their respective baseball and softball tournaments until Tuesday. There was talk and support in some quarters to play the games Memorial Day as the usual cranky New England spring weather has eaten up the makeup schedule.

Memorial Day is a family day for many. Sometimes sports doesn’t trump all. Yep, we have played on federal holidays like President’s Day and Columbus Day.  But to equate those two with Memorial Day is reaching. They for the most part are not parade or picnic days.

We do play Thanksgiving Day, it is tradition now. Most communities do not have morning parades. Sometimes the day is bigger than the game. Nice job to the NVL.

I am growing into a bigger soccer fans because my 14-year old son is hooked and has me watching Barclay Premier games on Saturdays. That being said I thoroughly enjoyed Saturday’s Champions League final with Real Madrid rallying past Atletico Madrid, 4-1.

Sergio Ramos’ header with two minutes left in stoppage time to tie the game, 1-1, was stunning. It was good stuff. So for all you soccer fans out there, I’m getting there.

Gee, 2014 is not quite turning out to be 2013 for the Red Sox now is it? Everything fell into the place a year ago and everything is falling out of place this year. That is why titles are so special. Getting there is great, staying there? Now that is a challenge.

Can I just say that I’m tired of playing my Thursday night golf league in the rain. Yeah, I know it provides another great excuse for a less than stellar game, but I think I would rather play in nice weather with no excuses. I’m tired of sloshing around in life preserver.

Two weeks to one of the great events of the Northwest Corner, the Litchfield Hills Road Race. A lot of running (for some), a lot of laughing (for most) and a lot of love (for all). The second Sunday in June, you have to love it.

It went by rather quietly this spring, but it has been unusual not having Scooter Zappone around. Scooter guided the Nonnewaug softball team for almost two decades winning seven BL titles before moving to Holy Cross two seasons ago. The Crusaders went in a different direction this spring. Meanwhile, not having one of the area’s most recognizable and successful faces around has been noted.

Landon Donovan? He belongs.

NVL softball and baseball championships this week and may the best teams win. Have a great Memorial Day all.
