March 10, 2020

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --- The UConn men’s basketball team’s top two scorers, senior guard Christian Vital and freshman guard James Bouknight, were honored Tuesday as the American Athletic Conference announced its all-conference teams.

Vital was named to the AAC All-Conference First Team, while Bouknight was selected to the All-Conference Third Team, and was a unanimous selection to the AAC All-Freshman Team. The teams were selected by a vote of the conference head coaches, who were not allowed to vote for their own players.

Vital (Queens Village, N.Y.) leads the Huskies in scoring (16.4) and rebounding (6.3) and ranks in the top 10 nationally in steals (2.5) and free throw percentage (.899). In conference games, he averaged 17.9 ppg, second in the league, 5.4 rebounds, and led the league in steals and free throw percentage.

Vital, who has been named the AAC Player of the Week in each of the last two weeks, had led UConn to wins in its last five games of the regular season. He has scored 20-plus points in 10 games this season, led the Huskies in scoring in 15 games and led in rebounding in nine. He currently ranks 10th on UConn’s all-time scoring list with 1,735 points. He is UConn’s first All-Conference First Team pick since then-sophomore Jalen Adams in 2016-17 and UConn’s fourth AAC First Team pick overall.

He is joined on the All-Conference First Team by Jarron Cumberland and Tre Scott of Cincinnati, Precious Achiuwa of Memphis and Martins Igbanu of Tulsa.

Bouknight (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is second on the Huskies in scoring (13.0) overall. In conference games, he is averaging 15.3 and has combined with Vital to form the highest-scoring duo in the league. During UConn’s resurgence over the last 10 games, he has averaged 17.8 points and 5.6 rebounds. The UConn freshman has been named the league’s Player of the Week once and Freshman of the Week twice. He is UConn’s fourth AAC All-Freshman Team pick overall.

On the AAC All-Conference Second Team is Jayden Gardner of ECU, Nate Hinton and Caleb Mills of Houston, Quinton Rose of Temple and Jaime Echenique of Wichita State.

Joining Bouknight on the ACC All-Conference Third Team are Kendric Davis, Tyson Jolly and Isiaha Mike of SMU, and Brandon Rachal of Tulsa.

Besides Bouknight, the All-Freshman Team includes Caleb Mills of Houston and Precious Achiuwa of Memphis, who were also unanimous picks, as well as Marcus Sasser of Houston and Lester Quinones of Memphis.
