Eventful first round at Travelers.
CROMWELL: First round action at the Travelers Championship is in the books after an eventful opening day of action that saw player’s post low scores after morning rain slowed the greens down to a manageable level.
A week removed from playing close to par golf in the US Open, the TPC River Highlands was a welcome relief and the top of the leader board reflects just that.
Brendan Steele is the leader as play ended on Thursday with a 62 good for minus 8 as final mark in a round that featured no bogies.
Steele posted an eagle, six birdies and 11 pars in a very consistent first day that saw him flirt with the course record of 60 but come up just short over the last four holes.
A world of golfers are right behind the leader.
Two sit at minus seven, Bud Cauley and Ryan Moore while five come in minus 6.
That group includes Chad Campbell, who if not for a double bogey on 15 may have challenged Steele for the lead.
Joe Durant, Jeff Maggert, Scott Langley and Eric Axley aslo cvame in at minus 6.
Defending champ Ken Duke is tied with six others anus 5 after Duke got hot on the back nine on Thursday.
Trever Immelman had the crowd buzzing when he pulled off an extremely rare double Eagle on the Par 5, 523 yard, 13th hole, just his third of the morning.
His tee shot traveled 289 yards putting in good position to hit the green but his next shot went the remaining 246 yards and found the bottom of the cup.
Immelman’s hot start would not last though, he currently sits tied for 40th place at minus one.
Crowd favorite and former winner Bubba Watson sits tied with 11 others at minus three after one day.
With the weather forecast looking pretty good for the next three days, the scores may not stay this low but with a very tight field, expect a battle.
