Franklin resigns as Bears basketball coach
THOMASTON – Thomaston High School is in the market for new boys basketball coach. Gary Franklin has submitted his resignation ending a three-year stint as the Bears head man in order to pursue educational goals.
“The young men at Thomaston High School deserve a coach who would be able to give 100 % of their time and effort before, during and after the season, both on and off the court,” said Franklin who is a history teacher at Newtown High School. “As a teacher that is no longer in the district and pursing a degree in school administration, it is impossible for me to continue to serve in this role.”
Franklin began his teaching career in Thomaston and taught for three years in the district before taking a job in Newtown two years ago.
Franklin posted a 22-41 record in his three seasons as Bears coach. His best season came in 2012-13, when he guided the Bears to their first winning season in 11 years and a spot in the Berkshire League Tournament semifinals.
“Having the opportunity to lead the 2012-13 team to its first winning season in so long is at the top of the list of my proudest accomplishments,” said Franklin.
Thomaston Athletic Director Jen Ewart said the search would begin prominently and expressed a preference for an-house candidate from within the system. Current JV coach Aaron Bunel is the music teacher at the high school.
