Gabby Williams named AAC Freshman of the Week. Jefferson makes honor roll.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – For the second time this season, University of Connecticut women’s basketball forward Gabby Williams (Sparks, Nev.) has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday morning.
In addition, junior guard Moriah Jefferson (Glenn Heights, Texas) was placed on the conference’s weekly honor roll.
The freshman, who previously received the accolade on Dec. 22, recorded a career-best 15 points to go along with nine points in UConn’s 98-60 win over Tulsa at the XL Center on Jan. 7, before pulling down an incredible 16 rebounds and chipping in 12 points against the Mustangs on Sunday in route to her first career double-double.
During the two game stretch, Williams shot 68-percent (13-of-19) from the field and notched four total steals.
In 14 appearances off the bench, Williams is averaging 8.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in just 15.1 minutes. The forward’s .658 field goal percentage is tops on the team.
Jefferson grabs an honor roll selection after continuing her hot stretch of play, shooting 71-percent in the Huskies’ 2-0 week and recording her first-ever double-double (11 points, 10 assists) against the Mustangs on Sunday afternoon.
Over her last six games, the guard has connected on 41-of-57 shots from the field and is shooting 77.8 percent (14-of-18) from beyond the arc.
In total, the Huskies have recorded four Freshman of the Week nods and three Player of the Week honors in the 2014-15 campaign.
The Huskies return to the friendly confines of Harry A. Gampel Pavilion for the first time since Nov. 23 when they play host to league-foe Temple on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game on SNY or listen in live on the UConn/IMG Radio Network.
