Green Woods Country Club in Winsted has been honored by Susan G. Komen for the Cure Connecticut for its work in raising money for the organization, whose mission is to fund research and education about breast cancer.

Last year, Green Woods raised $8,000.00 to fund screenings and research in the state. The club received the Pink Crusader Award at Infinity Hall in Hartford this past June.

“Last fall we were able to make our largest donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure Connecticut to date,” said general manager/head professional Scott Mattiello. “They were so impressed with our growth in only two years that they chose to honor us at a special event in Hartford in June. There with corporate giants Aetna and United Technologies was our own little golf club. I feel the spirit of our club comes across to anyone who comes in contact with us. Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous help of our largest corporate sponsors.” The club began its fundraising efforts this year with an annual car show in August, which raised over $1,300. A golf tournament, to be held Oct. 3, additional sponsors, along with a raffle have helped the club raise over $13,000 in two seasons.

Said Mattiello, “This is our third year of our efforts to raise money for the Komen organization and we are off to a great start. However, additional raffle items and donations would always help. The golf outing already has 11 foursomes and we are looking for 15, so that has filled up quickly.”

Green Woods is seeking support for this year tournament and sponsorships are available at the platinum ($2,000), gold ($1,500), and silver ($1,000) levels. Individuals or corporations can also sponsor various contests and areas on the course. The fee to play in the 18-hole tournament is $80 per person. A continental breakfast will be served prior to a 9 a.m. start with lunch served after play. There are a number of contests, including a hole-in-one contest sponsored by Torrington Ford.
