Huskies Add Makurat to Freshman Class
STORRS, Conn. – Head coach Geno Auriemma and the UConn women’s basketball team announced the signing of Ania Makurat to the Huskies’ incoming freshman class Wednesday.
“We’re excited to have Ania on campus this season,” Auriemma said. “She’s a versatile perimeter player and comes in with pro and international experience. Even though she’s a freshman, I think she’ll bring maturity to the team. We think she’s going to have an immediate impact on the roster.”
A native of Gdynia, Poland, Makurat is a 6-foot-1 guard. She played the last two seasons for Arka Gdynia in the Basket Liga Kobiet, Poland’s top women’s basketball league. At 19 years old, Makurat was the youngest player on her team. She averaged 8.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game this season, helping lead Arka Gdynia to a third-place finish.
Makurat represented Poland in the 2017 U-20 Women’s European Championship, where she averaged 9.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
Makurat joins guard Aubrey Griffin as UConn’s incoming freshmen. Griffin is a 2019 McDonald’s All-American, WBCA All-American and Miss New York Basketball.
