LCS.com Staff Football Picks Review
It was a tough week for local high school football teams and it was just marginally better for the LCS.com staff during week one of this season's weekly football picks.
Pat Tiscia, Tim Gaffney and Rick Wilson all went 3-2 last week in out five games, yours truly went 2-3. I tried to show a little more local loyalty than my cohorts and paid for it.
Points were hard to come by, or at least offense was, for the locals. Housatonic/Wamogo was blanked and Lewis Mills and Wolcott Tech both managed just 6 points.
Torrington was the high scored this week with 26 points, but got outscored by Ansonia's star running back Arkeel Newsome - in the first half. Gilbert had over 400 yards of offense but still couldn't find a way to get past Coventry.
We'll be back at with picks for a slate of games later this week and hopefully the locals will play better and have better results while we will win a few more of our picks.
Here's a look back at the games and our picks. One bright note from the LCS.com picks was we all hit our "Lock of the Week", but then again we all took Ansonia and a 6-year-old could have done that (more on that below).
Week 1 Games
Windsor Locks 40, Housatonic-Wamogo 0: Tristian Cauley rushed for 189 yards and three touchdowns for the winners while the Mountaineers dropped their seventh straight dating to last season.
This one got us all and it looks like it might be a long season for Housy and the single wing.
Winners - None  Losers: All four of us.
Prince Tech 38, Wolcott Tech 6: Mike Ross ran for a 7-yard TD for the Wildcats.
Winners: All. CSC move will eventually help but Wolcott Tech has some work left to do.
Coventry 34, Gilbert/Northwestern 21: The Yellowjackets (0-1) got three touchdowns of 80-yards or more and still lost.
Devan Valdes threw three TD passes to Tom Myers and ran for another score for Coventry.
Tony Ortiz led the GN offense with 158 yards rushing and 104 receiving.
Winners: Tiscia, Wilson. Losers: Gaffney, Nestor
Ansonia 66, Torrington 26: We all got this one right and we all picked it as our "Lock of the Week". But we aren't patting ourselves on the back, turns out a 6-year-old could see what was coming the first time Arkeel Newsome touched the ball.
My son Jack turns to me in the bleachers after Newsome's first carry and this is all he needed to say. "Daddy, number two on the white team, he's FAST." He sure is Jack, he sure is.
Nine first half carries resulted in five TDs for Newsome while the Red Raiders got a defensive TD and a return TD and still lost.
Winners - All of us and we all hit our "Lock" pick.
Morgan 40, Lewis Mills 6: The Spartans had opened their first two varsity seasons with wins but the third time was not the charm.
Winners: Gaffney. Losers: Nestor, Tiscia, Wilson.
Records after Week 1
Tim Gaffney: 3-2, Lock picks 1-0
Rick Wilson: 3-2, Lock picks 1-0
Pat Tiscia: 3-2, Lock picks 1-0
John Nestor: 2-3, Lock picks 1-0
