Let the States Begin. Tournament action gets underway after the Memorial Day break.
Torrington-The Torrington girls will kick off their 2016 State Tournament on Wednesday, June 1 at 4 p.m. versus an opponent to be determined.
Head coach Maryanne Musselman and the Raiders get a first round bye thanks to their stellar 16-4 regular season that landed them as a fourth seed in a crowded and talented Class L bracket.
Torrington will play the winner of the No.13 Brookfield versus No. 20 Platt, who play on Tuesday, May 31.
The top three in L are some of the top teams in the state, Fritch (20-0) is the number one team in the state at seasons end. Also ahead of Torrington in the rankings are Masuk (No. 2, 17-3) and Maloney (No. 3, 16-4).
The Raiders are on the same side of the Class L bracket as Fritch, meaning they would have to get through them if they want to get to the finals.
Lots of work needs to get done before that point though with No. 8 RHAM and No. 9 East Haven on the same side of the very deep top side of the brackets.
….On the boy’s side, a late season slump sends the Torrington baseball team on the road next week when they face No. 6 Platt Tech on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
If they get past Tech, the Raiders will take on the winner of the No. 11 ND-WH versus No. 22 Maloney in the second round.
….In Berkshire League softball action, the two top teams, the Thomaston and Wamogo girls take the second and thirds slots, respectively.
Each team, along with top seed Holy Cross (the defending champions) have a first round bye next week and have a chance to meet if both reach the semi-finals.
The No. 11 Wolcott Tech girls have had a terrific season, posting a 14-6 record and earned a home game on Tuesday against No. 22 Two Rivers.
Shepaug is the other BL School who will be playing in the postseason from Class S.
Nonnewaug, Northwestern and Lewis Mills made the grade in Class M with the Highlanders earning a home game next week.
….Representing the BL boy’s in Class S will be Thomaston, who host Cromwell on Tuesday, Shepaug, Terryville and Wamogo.
Gilbert will host Housatonic on Tuesday as well in a battle of the BL.
Who will make the deepest run? Who will be the last team standing?
Stay tuned, their plenty of action to come.
