The fall sports season is underway and the Lewis Mills Spartans look like they have more than a few teams that will have strong seasons in the Berkshire League and perhaps beyond.

Both soccer teams advanced to the Class M semifinals last season and are both off to fast starts, winning all four games they played between them and outscoring the opposition by a combined 26-1 margin.

The girl’s volleyball team has also started the season on a high note, winning three matches last week, including a nice win over Southington.

Here's a look at what the Spartans did last week and what they have coming up as the Fall season really gets going.

GIRLS SOCCER: The Spartans got off to a fast start, outscoring their first two opponents, 13-1. Lewis Mills opened the season with a 7-0 thrashing of Shepaug and followed that up with a 6-1 victory over Northwestern.

THIS WEEK: Lewis Mills hosts Wamogo on Monday and travels to Housatonic on Thursday.

BOYS SOCCER: Coach Ben Kulas was hoping for improvement from his defense as the season started and so far he has gotten it. The Spartans have yet to allow a goal and outscored their two opponents last week by a 13-0 margin.

Lewis Mills opened the season with a solid 3-0 triumph over Shepaug and then ripped Thomaston, 10-0, on the road. Ryan Finley, Jordan Sokol and Freddy Marinelli each scored in the opener and seven different players scored against Thomaston led by Finley (3 goals) and Sokol (2 goals).

THIS WEEK: The Spartans have an early season showdown with Nonnewaug (2-0) on Tuesday at home and host Northwestern under the lights on Friday night at Nassahegan.

"This week is an absolutely huge week for us and a major test for this young group," Kulas said. "We play Nonnewaug and Northwestern. We will see how good we really are after this week. Nonnewaug and Northwestern look very strong.  If we want to have a chance at repeating as Berkshire League champions we need two good results this week. If we don't get six points then we will be in big trouble and playing catch up the remainder of the regular season. "

VOLLEYBALL: The Spartans girl’s volleyball team is off to a fast start after winning three matches in three days last week.

Lewis Mills opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Avon on Tuesday. The Spartans followed that up we a 3–2 win over perennial power Southington and they capped their perfect week with a 3-1 triumph over Valley Regional on Thursday.

THIS WEEK: Mills goes for win number four on Monday when it hosts Watertown. The Spartans then hit the road for games at Ellington n Wednesday and Terryville on Friday.

FIELD HOCKEY: Lewis Mills split two games last week to open the season 1-1.

The Spartans dropped a 1-0 decision at Thomaston in their season opener and rebounded with a 2-0 victory at home over Housatonic.

THIS WEEK: Mills has an important week coming up with a trip to Shepaug (2-0) on Tuesday before hosting BL power Nonnewaug (2-0) on Friday.

FOOTBALL: The Spartans lost their season opener to Morgan, 40-8, on Friday night in Clinton.

Morgan put the game out of reach with a 27-point second quarter and Lewis Mills wasn't able to get much going on offense to try and mount a comeback.

"We had a terrible second quarter and we made too many mistakes and didn't adjust," First-year coach Jose Santana said.

The Spartans look to turn things around Saturday when they host Avon on Saturday morning at 10:30 am at Muzzy Field. The Falcons will be hungry for a win themselves as they are coming off a tough 16-13 loss to Canton.

"We will rebound this week and be ready. We'll learn from our mistakes and play tougher against Avon," Santana said. "One bad game won't dictate our season."

CROSS COUNTRY: The boys and girls cross country teams have a pair of meets this week. The Spartans will be in Winsted to face Gilbert and Shepaug on Tuesday and they host Bristol Eastern on Friday.
