Litchfield County Sports Staff Football Picks For Week 3
Last week was redemption week for us here at LCS.com as we all went 4-1.
Torrington couldn't hold a 20-0 lead at Wolcott and that cost yours truly and Pat Tiscia a perfect week. Gilbert/Northwestern picked up its first win of the season with a win over Enfield and handed Tim Gaffney and Rick Wilson their only setbacks of the week in the process.
Things get no easier for the Red Raiders as they host defending Class S state champion Holy Cross on Friday night. Wolcott Tech, Nonnewaug and Housatonic/Wamogo are also looking for their first wins of the season while Lewis Mills (0-2) has the week off after a loss to Cromwell last week.
GN has its home opener Saturday against Ellington/Somers (2-0) and the Yellowjackets figure to at least put on an offensive show for the home crowd. GN (1-1) has scored 62 points in its first two games but has allowed 60.
Weather could be a factor this week with a rainy Friday already moving games around and slick conditions likely for a number of games Saturday.
Here are our picks and good luck to all the locals.
John Nestor (6-4, Locks 2-0)
Canton at Housatonic/Wamogo 7:00 p.m. Friday
A matchup of two teams headed in opposite directions right now.
Canton (1-1) looks like they have things turned around after an 0-10 campaign in 2011. The Warriors posted an 8-0 victory on the road last week over Windsor Locks/Suffield/East Granby to snap a 13-game losing skid that dated to the 2010 season.
Housy (0-2) has lost eight straight since a 4-0 start last season and Canton will start a better kind of streak with a win in this one. Canton 20, Housy 6.
Holy Cross at Torrington, 10 a.m. Saturday
Holy Cross is the defending Class S state champion and off to a 2-0 start. Last season a loss to the Crusaders haunted the Red Raiders all season in their playoff quest, this season that quest never gets going as Torrington falls to 0-3. Holy Cross 34, Torrington 23.
Wolcott Tech at Capital/Classical/Achieve. 1st, 12:00 p.m. Saturday
Capital is 2-0 and has scored 89 points in two games. They'll find the end zone plenty Saturday. Capital 42, Wolcott Tech 18(Lock of the Week).
East Hampton/Vinal Tech at Nonnewaug, 1:00 p.m. Saturday
East Hampton/Vinal Tech is playing its third straight road game to start the season and is looking for its first win. This is a chance for the Chiefs to break through for a victory but I can't bring myself to predict one yet. East Hampton/Vinal 35, Nonnewaug 12.
Ellington/Somers at Gilbert/NW Regional, 1:30 p.m. Saturday
GN has firepower on offense while Ellington has allowed only 14 points in two games. The Jackets will offer a tougher test for the Knights D in this one. GN 38, Ellington 17.
Rick Wilson (7-3, 2-0)
Holy Cross at Torrington
It's been a rocky start for the Raiders and their is no let up from the schedule-makers. Look for the Crusaders to hand the Raiders their third loss of the season. Holy Cross 31, Torrington 18.
Canton at Housatonic/Wamogo

I always pick the team that has a Hall of Fame. Isn't Canton where the pro football Hall of Fame is? Canton 28, Housatonic/Wamogo 12.
Wolcott Tech at Capital/Classical/Achieve
Hey, the Wildcats are playing against half of the state. If one more school gets involved, the name won't fit in the paper.
Capital-Classical-Achieve 21, Wolcott Tech 14.
East Hampton/Vinal Tech at Nonnewaug
Nonnewaug has killer soccer teams and field hockey is great. East Hampton/Vinal Tech 35, Nonnewaug 7 (Lock of the Week).
Ellington/Somers at Gilbert/NW Regional

The Yellowjackets win on a 48-yard field goal. Gilbert 24, Ellington/Somers 21.
Pat Tiscia (7-3, 2-0)
Holy Cross at Torrington
Holy Cross 44, Torrington 30 - Lock of the week
Canton at Housatonic/Wamogo
Canton 20, Housy 12
Wolcott Tech at Capital/Classical/Achieve
Capital 45, Wolcott Tech 16
East Hampton/Vinal Tech at Nonnewaug
East Hampton 48, Nonnewaug 6
Ellington/Somers at Gilbert/NW Regional
Gilbert 23, Ellington0
