Football is in the home stretch with just about one month left in the regular season. Most locals are playing for pride, experience or their first win in what has been a bit of a disappointing stretch on the local gridiron.
Hats off to Wolcott Tech for picking up its first win of the season last week. Lewis Mills and Housatonic/Wamogo look to do the same this week with the Spartans appearing to have the best shot at winless East Hampton/Vinal Tech while the Mountaineers have a tall task ahead of them Saturday night at undefeated Avon.
Speaking of the Falcons, they are currently ranked third in Class L at 6-0 with big games against Enfield and Ellington/Somers on the horizon. Canton (4-2) has to win out and maybe get a little help in Class S, but if the Warriors beat GN, they have a really good shot at finishing 8-2 after going 0-10 in 2011.
I was a prefect 5-0 last week, including picking the Wildcats while Pat Tiscia went 4-1 and is 14-1 over the last three weeks.

Friday
Lewis Mills (0-5) at East Hampton/Vinal Tech (0-6), 6:30 p.m. - One of these two will avoid a winless season on Friday night. The Spartans have had trouble finding the end zone all season, scoring just 27 points in five games while being shutout twice. Home field edge could be the difference. East Hampton/Vinal Tech 24, Lewis Mills 18.
Torrington (2-4) at Derby (4-2), 7:00 p.m. - Derby still harbors hopes of a Class S playoff berth but will have to win out, starting Friday night against Torrington. The Red Raiders have lost two straight - both since a group of players suspended for two games due to a hazing incident returned to team. Torrington's defense has been M.I.A., allowing 122 points in its last two games. Nothing left for Red Raiders this season than to get young guys experience and try and play spoiler, one of two could happen Friday. Derby 38, Torrington 19.
Saturday
Cheney Tech (3-3) at Wolcott Tech (1-5), 1:00 p.m. - The Wildcats have been better since they have been home as they played Platt Tech tough and then broke through for their first win of the season last week with a 49-6 drubbing of Whitney Tech. Can Wolcott Tech start a win streak? Why not. Wolcott Tech 27, Cheney Tech 22.
Canton (4-2) at Gilbert/NW Regional (2-3), 1:30 p.m. - Canton has won 2 straight, including a 28-26 victory over Coventry last week. Coach Paul Philippon is going a nice job with the Warriors, who went 0-10 last season and entered the 2012 campaign mired in a 13-game losing skid. GN is a disappointing 2-3 and has been plagued by turnovers this season. Canton 22, GN 15.
Housatonic/Wamogo (0-5) at Avon (6-0) 6:30 p.m. - Falcons can pick a score in this one and will move one step closer to a Class L playoff berth. Avon 49, Housy 6 (Lock of the Week).
Pat Tiscia (23-7, 5-1 Locks)
