Mills girls volleyball wins BL title
BURLINGTON - It was a long time coming so the Lewis Mills volleyball team decided it should leave no doubt about who was he best in the Berkshire League this season.
The Spartans completed a perfect run through the BL and won their first league title since 1998 with a 3-1 victory over Northwestern on Tuesday night at Lewis Mills High School.
Lewis Mills won the match 25-15, 21-25, 25-19 and 25-19 to improve to 17-2 on the season and finish the BL regular season at a perfect 10-0. Tori Kryzwick had 13 aces and 12 kills and Teagan Dunn added 10 kills for the Spartans, who have won eight straight and are projected to be the No. 2 seed in Class M when the state tournament starts next week.
"The girls really worked hard and I'm really proud of their performance, our record and winning the BL title," Lewis Mills coach Chuck Drda said.
The Spartans' hard work paid off with a stellar season. They won their first four matches of the season beofre a 3-1 loss to Ellington. After that setback Mills won five straight, all by 3-0 scores, until a loss to Sheehan stopped the streak.
That was the last time The Spartans would taste defeat as they bounced back from the Sheehan loss to sweep Ellington, 3-0, and start their current eight-match run.
As good as they have been, the Spartans have not had a cakewalk. There have been some tough matches along the way and injuries have forced Drda to do some lineup juggling and players to move to some different positions but they pulled it off without missing a beat.
"The leadership from the captains Tori Kryzwick and Katie Hurlock was tremendous," Drda said. "I am especially impressed with Hannah Doyle for leading the team as the setter while covering for injuries. She never set before and did a great job."
Northwestern could have earned a share of the BL title with a win but Mills got out to a good start and rebounded after dropping game two. Katie Hurlock had 24 assists to go along with six kills and three aces, Hannah Doyle added 11 assists, three aces and three kills while Kryzwick had 12 digs and Dunn added six digs.
Molly Quinn Allger (7 kills, 8 digs), Amanda Stocker (5 kills, 12 digs, 5 blocks), Alise Martel (2 aces, 2kills, 5 digs, 2 blocks) Leah Quinn Alger, Mica Martin, Rachael Ashburn, Rachel Seleman, Hunter Fabretti and Amanda Rousseau have all been contributors this season to the Spartans success.
"The season was a total team effort and we couldnt have had as much success with out every player stepping up at some point and contributing," Drda said.
Next up is the BL tournament on Friday, hosted by Lewis Mills. The semifinals are scheduled to be played at 5:00 p.m. and finals at 7:00 pm.
