Mills wins battle of Spartans in boys tennis, takes over top spot in BL. Story by coach Patrick Linton.
On Monday, the two Berkshire League Spartan teams met to decide who will remain in 1st place in the Berkshire League. I am happy to report that on this blustery, cold May day, the Mills team won 3-2. The Mills Spartan Boys defeated a very talented and deep Shepaug Spartan Team. It was a similar score in the last match- in singles we swept all three securing at least a 3-2 win, which ended up being the final result. Both Mills doubles teams lost to the Shepaug doubles teams, who have dominated the league this year. Thank you team for giving your coach a great belated 30th Birthday present.
#1 Singles: Trevor Robinson (Mills) defeated Jack Brotherton (Shepaug): 7-5, 6-2 Trevor seemed to have trouble moving and stepping into the ball in the first set. After a few minor adjustments in his stroke and footwork Trevor was able to close out the second set.
#2 Singles: Holden Robinson (Mills) defeated Ellery Rourk (Shepaug): 6-1, 6-3
Comments: Holden won relatively quickly in the 1st set, but found himself down 1-3 in the second set, which is a rare occurrence. Holden made sure to adjust his game to win the next 5 games.
#3 Singles: Bill Bentley (Mills) defeated Kirby Peters (Shepaug): 7-6 (7-3), 6-3
Comments: the closest match of the day, with both players knowing this could be the match that could determine a win for his respective team. Kirby was able to get many of Bills shots back and was patient to play the point out. Bill took a bit to get himself into the match, going down 1-4 early on, but he battled back by working the middle of the court and playing more consistently.
#1 Doubles: Jake Perfetto and Sinclair Bush (Mills) lost to Michael Korniewicz and Kelen Rhikoff (Shepaug): 1-6, 2-6
Comments: This was Sinclair's first match in a about a week, due a knee injury. After not playing for a week or so the teams timing and communication was a bit off, but improved as the match went on. I will be interested to see how this team will do over the course of the next two days.
#2 Doubles: Eric Jameson and Justin Markert (Mills) lost to Greg Valentine and Anthony Amato (Shepaug): 2-6, 4-6
Comments: This was Justin's second varsity match of the year and played with a lot more confidence and consistency. Even though Eric and Justin did not win, the two played strong competitive tennis in the second set.
This puts us at 13-2 for the season and in soul possession of 1st place in the Berkshire league, with two matches left against a talented Housatonic team and a scrappy Thomaston team.
Shepaug- Great match, as always. Good luck against Housatonic and Northwestern!
Up next is Housatonic home on Tuesday, 5/14. Let's go Mills!
