Nine Days in June. #3. The First Annual OWTS Banquet.
The First Annual Oliver Wolcott Tech Banquet
Tuesday, June 11. Bogey’s at Greenwoods Country Club
It felt so good to get back to where it all started, with Robbie at Greenwood’s Country Club.
So much has transpired since that day five years ago it all started with Persechino believing in what I was trying to create with the first THS awards banquet.
Returning to the room at 11 a.m. (pre-game, remember), the memories flooded in and I couldn’t wait to start another tradition with a Wildcats program that features some truly amazing student/athletes, a dedicated coaching group and great parents.
Ray Tanguay, my neighbor a quarter mile down the road from me, is truly one of the most dedicated Athletic Directors I know.
He’s never off duty. His passion and devotion to everything OWTS shines bright each and every day.
Tanguay had reached out to me during the fall of 2018 about holding a banquet for the Wildcats, similar to the one we had for their neighbors across the street at THS.
So, we sent out invitations to the 26 student/athletes we were going to honor and got set for the night.
I had to make sure I brought my homemade brownies (they have become a staple at both) and got everything set up for the 5:30 check in time.
The fine folks at Bogey’s are people I have seen at another tremendous location; Jimmy’s Store in Torrington and they are simply the best at setting up and throwing these events.
Mr. Tanguay had created certificates of achievement from the school and each of the recipients got one of those along with a custom-made mug that had the Wolcott Tech and LCS logos on them along with the date.
Some of his coaches, including Jim Pepper (also one of the most dedicated teachers and coaches in our city) and Ray Royals served as guest speakers, talking about the pride they feel in leading these fine young men and women.
Luke Pepper documented the event once again and we were off and running.
A great dinner, tremendous student/athletes and a group of parents who showed up for their kids.
Thanks again to Ray Tanguay for his tremendous leadership in helping put this night together.
I expect the OWTS Banquet will grow each year, just not too big.
I want to keep it with Robbie P!
So, that wraps up the post-season for Litchfield County Sports but let’s review some dates in 2020.
The 2020 Torrington Kids Marathon: Sunday, May 31 at THS.
The Sixth Annual THS Banquet: Tuesday, June 2 at Chatterley’s.
The Second Annual OWTS Banquet: Thursday, June 4 at Bogey’s at Greenwoods Country Club.
Five days, three major events.
Bring it on…..
