The 2019 THS Hall of Fame. Inductee: John Strawson.
John Strawson, THS class of 2005, was a three-year varsity member and starting center for the THS boys’ basketball team. He was selected team captain in his senior year, leading the Raiders to the C.I.A.C. Class L semi-finals. The 2005 team won 20 games that season, reaching that many wins for the first time in 47 years.
Upon graduation from THS, John entered Springfield College. At Springfield, John was a four-year member and two-year starter for the men’s basketball team. He served as team captain in the 2008-2009 season. He played and started in all 28 games in that senior season. He was the two-time selection as the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference player of the week in his senior season. He led the team in rebounds, was the team’s third leading scorer, and was third in assists, second in field goal and three-point percentage in his senior season.
John has been working at The Forman School since 2010. During this time, he has been a mathematics teacher, coach (soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, girls’ softball and ultimate Frisbee), advisor, Director of the Summer Program, and dorm parent. In 2013, he led his basketball team to the 2013 Hudson Valley League Championship, a feat not accomplished in decades. In 2018, his team won the HVAC softball championship. John’s accomplishments during his tenure as basketball coach has earned him the recognition of being selected by the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council as the Coach of the Year in 2013, 2014, and 2015, an achievement never accomplished in the history of the organization. His tireless commitment and dedication to the Forman community has earned both he and the school respect and admiration wherever they go.
John joins his sister, Christine Gamari, and his uncles Jim and Tim Considine, in the THS Athletic Hall of Fame.
