Torrington boys soccer looks to rebound in 2016.
TORRINGTON: The Torrington boys’ soccer team is looking to put their 2015 campaign in the rear view mirror quickly.
An uncharacteristic 6-10 season, hampered by key injuries to top players a year ago, has led the team to put in some extra time during the off season.
“The kids were really dedicated in the off season,” head Coach Mike Fritch said. “I am looking forward to them bringing that determination and passion into this season. If we can avoid the injury bug, which got us at times last year, I think we can have a very successful campaign.”
A pair of All-Iron players will lead the way for Fritch. Naseem Thompson (junior, mid-forward) and senior Brandon Stater (back) are back and look to lead the Raiders back to the spot they are used to being, amongst the leaders in the Naugatuck Valley League.
Also expected to help with the offensive effort will be junior Alex Segovia and senior midfielder Nick DallaValle. Senior back Scott Dixon gives the team a solid back line.
Much will be learned early in the season as Fritch looks to see who will stand out within the roster.
“We will need a lot of new contributors to step up into new roles this year,” Fritch said. “Therefore, our pre-season will take on numerous position battles.”
No captains have been named as of yet.
As for the NVL field this year, Fritch expects some great battles.
“There are some strong returning players this year in the NVL,” Fritch said. “The league is going to be very competitive in each division. Overall we look forward to contending for the division and NVL title and then advancing forward in the state tournament.
Torrington opens their 2016 campaign on the road at Holy Cross on Friday, September 9 with their home opener the following Friday against Oxford on September 16 at 6 p.m.
