Week One Local Football Review.
TORRINGTON: The 2013 local football season got underway this past weekend and more than a few story lines emerged.
Win of The Week: The Gilbert/Northwestern Yellowjackets traveled to take on a team that is a traditional powerhouse in Cromwell and came away with a stunning 34-27 win.
“GN” ran for over 400 yards Thursday night behind 235-yards from Tony Ortiz and 164 from John Lippincott.
Ortiz started the scoring with a 75-yard burst on his team’s first possession and then followed up with a 64 yard scamper in the second quarter.
When Cromwell tied things up at 27 with back to back touchdown in the second half, Ortiz caught an 8-yard TD pass from Lippincott to give head coach Scott Salius and company a signature program win if there ever was one.
Upset of The Week: Canton 16, Avon 13. Not only did the Warriors grab their program’s biggest win over powerhouse Avon, the final score marked the first time Canton had ever led the Falcon’s.
Tough Openers: Ansonia 52, Torrington 7: Hoping the schedule makers take this one off the opening week next year, the Torrington Raiders came out of the season opener at least knowing it was about football again. But starting against Arkeel Newsome and company cannot be good for any team’s outlook.
Old Saybrook 37, Housatonic 7: The Mountaineers also opened against one of the areas top teams and had a tough night.
Morgan 40, Lewis Mills 8: John Nestor will have a recap on a tough start for the Spartans.
Holy Cross 29, Watertown 7: Makes you wonder what Thanksgiving Day between the Indians and Torrington might look like. Tough openers for both programs.
