What a week this will be as we get ready to run to "The Sun".
THOMASTON: It’s going to be a good one. Don’t think I’m going out on a limb with that prediction as the #3 Thomaston Golden Bears face the #1 ranked Canton Warriors at the Mohegan Sun Arena next Saturday or Sunday.
Both teams punched their tickets on Friday night at Wilby High School before loudly supportive fan bases that promise to travel well to Uncasville.
The Warriors used a late 12-2 run to get by Notre Dame of Fairfield by a 52-42 score, while the Bears led throughout in a dominating 57-41 win over Immaculate of Danbury.
Thomaston plays in the Berkshire League, while Canton works their game in the NCCC with soon to be leaving Avon as their number one rival.
The Bears have won four straight BL title and are making their third consecutive trip back to “The Sun.”
At this rate, one of the suites at the gambling mecca will have to be renamed for the small school that could all fit into one of Mohegan’s expansive ballrooms.
Who could forget last year when the Bears and Abby Hurlbert drained those three free throws after being fouled in the act of launching a desperation trey to get by St Paul by one point.
The Warriors last appeared in the Class S final in 1999 when they lost to Valley Regional and have been to the big game one other time, in 1982 when they lost to Westbrook.
Mohegan Sun is a whole other world and the Warriors, who play in the NCCC, are going to be a terrific challenge for the Golden Bears.
The entire town of Thomaston will be on the move for certain as their hometown heroes make the trip east for the biggest prize.
We will have wall-to-wall coverage starting Monday on the buildup to this monumental week in local sports.
