The History of Litchfield County Sports

When Timothy Gaffney suggested an idea to two friends, Rick Wilson and Patrick Tiscia from outside the studios of WAPJ on Water Street in downtown Torrington in the summer of 2009, little did they know how far the journey would go.

The idea was born out of necessity after the three guys, all freelance sports writers who had seen the availability of work dry up as local newspapers cut staff and content.

Gaffney suggested they come up with a website of their own so they would have a place to publish their work. And from there, a company, an idea and a mindset was born.

The company is owned and operated by Gaffney, a Torrington resident since 1992.

The LCS Website

LitchfieldCountySports.com launched in September of 2009 and quickly became known as a place folks could go and discover the good news surrounding us in our communities every day.

Covering local sports was our mission, catching people doing the right thing was the mission and we had the professionals to do the job.

Over the next five years, we earned full credentials to the University of Connecticut, the flagship collegiate school in Connecticut, to cover any and all of their sports.

We have been to four National Championships with the UConn women and attended an Elite Eight game with the men the year both teams won the title in 2014.

In 2015, Litchfield County Sports Banquet was created in order to help celebrate the accomplishments of the students/athletes at Torrington High School.

The Oliver Wolcott Technical school joined the celebration with their own banquet in 2019.

The LCS Magazine

In 2017, the Litchfield County Sports Magazine launched and has been a highly successful publication which is sold in Torrington and Thomaston as well as by subscription.

Starting in 2018, Litchfield County Sports began creating and publishing magazines for the Torrington Public School system, something that continues to this day and points out the positive in each of the six schools that make up the district.

As we go forward, count on LCS to continue to tell the best stories about the best people.
