Anthony Samele wins prestigious Omar N. Pollick Scholarship

This year’s Omar N. Pollick Scholarship goes to Anthony Samele. He is the son of Dena Samele and the late Paul Samele Jr. of Torrington.

The annual $2,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Torrington area high school graduate every year since 1975 in honor of a great local sports activist.

Pollick, who died in 1973, promoted and coached Torrington youth sports all his life, with a particular fondness for Babe Ruth Baseball.

As a result, scholarship candidates are awarded points for grades, need, athletics and citizenship.

Samele graduated from Holy Cross High School In Waterbury this year.

He was a member of the varsity baseball team for four years.

Anthony was also the senior class secretary, a HCHS tour guide and a member of the Model UN, Investment Club and Ski and Snowboard Club. He also dedicated time helping at the HCHS community service day and the Friendly Hands Food Bank.

Anthony is planning on attending Coastal Carolina University in the fall, majoring in Business.
