Luca White wins it with a late three to complete Raider comeback.

TORRINGTON: Down 6-51 with 5:32 left in the fourth quarter of their out of conference game against Newington, things didn’t look good for the Torrington boys’ basketball team.

After suffering a tough loss to Seymour, the night before in which they were outscored by a 36-15 margin in the second half, another tough defeat looked like it might be in the cards for the Raiders.

Fortunately for the home team, junior Luca White had other ideas.

In the final two minutes, White converted one of two free throws, came up with a steal and then an assist, drained three ice-in-his-veins free throws before hitting a three pointer as time expired as Torrington came back to win by a 67-66 final, outscoring Newington, 16-5 after going down 10.

While White had the remarkable finishing touches, the reason the team was in that position in the first place was a group effort.

Here’s how that final 5:32 played out for the Raiders.

4:54: The comeback starts as DJ Williams hits a jumper, gets fouled and makes the free throw. 61-54

4:23: On the Raiders next possession, Isaac Finn cuts the lead to five with an offensive put back. 61-56

3:53 Raider defense causes Newington to use a time out.

3:12: Logan Tucciarone gets fouled on a defensive rebound. While he doesn’t convert, it keeps the Raiders within reach at 61-56.

2:43: Finn is fouled after grabbing a defensive board. Misses both, still 61-56 Newington.

2:37: Williams comes up with a key block on a Newington fast break. 661-56

2:30: Newington misses two free throws. 61-56

2:08: Raider defense causes Newington to take another time out.

1;58: Tucciarone takes a charge. 61-56.

1:41: White fouled on a drive, makes one of two free throws. 61-57

1:36: White comes up with the steal, finds Will Parkhouse with a terrific pass for the layup. 61-59.

1:04: Two free throws by Newington. 63-59

:55.9: Torrington turnover, 63-59

:47.8: Newington turnover 63-59

:28.8 Adi Puskarevic offensive put back 63-61

:23.9: Newington breaks press, layup makes it 65-61

: 17.6-White fouled on long three point try. Makes first two, Newington takes time out to try and freeze him but the junior converts on the third. 65-64.

:17.5: Newington makes one of two free throws after Raider foul to stop clock.

66-64.

:12.0: Raiders miss three point try.

:8.7: Raider’s foul. Newington missed both free throws.

The final :8.7: Puskarevic grabs the rebound, gets the ball to White who races down court starting on the right side of the three-point line before changing direction to his left.

Puskarevic sets a screen just outside the three-point line, giving White just enough distance between himself and the Newington defender.

White lets it go with just under two seconds and it finds the bottom of the net for a thrilling conclusion to this out conference matchup.

Torrington improves to 7-4 on the year.

They travel to take on Wilby on Tuesday before hosting Oxford on Friday.
