We caught up with Torrington boys swim coach Brian Arnold to see how the Raiders campaign has gone in the pool.
How has your season gone so far?
This season has been a bit of a rebuild. We graduated eight seniors last year and had a handful of swimmers who didn’t return this season, so our numbers are down.
With that being said, it’s still a solid group. We’ve lost a couple of close meets but in a sport like swimming, we are more focused on the end of season league and state championships than we are on dual meet wins and losses.
Who are your standouts this season?
We’ve had a few swimmers step up and take over some big roles in the absence of last year’s seniors: Danny Smith, Thomas Crowe, and our tri-captains Nic-Borja Garzon, Kaleb Kesl, & Scott Jaskelewicz have all really stepped up and are now leading our team.
Who has qualified for States at the moment?
We don’t have anyone who automatically qualified for states yet, but we have a few who are close and will most likely make the cut at the NVL Championship meet.
Right now, I’d say our best newcomers are Abe Radwan and Jackson Brewer-Karimi. They have both shown potential in the pool and an eagerness to learn the sport and how to improve their times.
