When the Connie Donahue Gymnasium first started to be THE place to watch a basketball in the late 90's and early 2000's, Nick Giampaolo was one of the Red Raider basketball players who set the fire under those we now call "crazies"

Giampaolo embodied hustle, dedication and a determination that at times made his head coach, Tony Turina slow him down from diving for loose balls during the end of practice.

A hard nosed, unselfish player who could score and contribute equally well. Giampaolo was a four year varsity player and a three year starter.

"The Running Raiders" were born during this time. Giampaolo and teammates like Jay Reginatto started running when the bus pulled into the parking lot of an away game and as soon as the Connie Donahue was open for play.

Torrington made runs into the quarterfinals of Class L in both his junior and senior years with overall records of 17-5 and 17-6 during that span.

It was a show when the Raiders played and everybody in town knew it and showed up.

After his senior year, Giampaolo was selected to the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Class L All-State First Team.

His career stat line is impressive.

15.2 points per game. 7.3 assists per game with 3.1 steals per game.

Almost a double-double for a career. That's something.

He is the only Raider to score more than 1000 points (1080), have over 500 assists (518) and come away with over 200 steals (220).

During the 2001 season, the Raiders averaged an astounding 80 points per game.

Three different players averaged over 1000 points between the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Turina pays him the ultimate complement when he calls his player, "Larry Bird on a high school basketball court."

After graduating from THS, Giampaolo was a volunteer for Turina and played a key roll in guiding the 2005 team to a semi-final appearnce and a 2006 State Championship.

Giampaolo coached the junior varsity in 2011 and 2013 as well.

A wedding is in the works for Giampaolo this summer, he will marry Natalie Roche.

One of the finest young men you will ever meet and get the privilege to know.
