30 Titans in 30 Days....Day 16...Spencer Thomas.
College: South Georgia College
Hometown: Loganville, GA
Titans Outlook: The addition of Thomas makes three players who will be coming to Torrington from South Georgia College this summer.
Rhett Jones (Pitcher) and Kaleb Kolbrook (Catcher) will join the sophomore who hails from Loganville, Pa and describes his pitching approach as “backwards”.
“I usually start with the off speed stuff and then go hard stuff when I need it.” Thomas said. “I’ve been using that approach since I was a reliever in high school.”
Mastering the art of throwing the change-up is something some pitchers struggle with most of their careers but Thomas has gotten ahead of the curve, so to speak.
In 18 games this spring, Thomas started 11 games and sported a 4-6 record with an ERA of 4.48, not his best year, considering he went 5-3 in his freshman year.
He threw 66.1 innings and struck out 48.
Summer ball will not be new to him, having played last summer in New York in the Perfect Game League for the Oneonta Outlaws, but his approach may be.
“I’m going to work out more this summer and get my strength up.” Thomas said. “Last year was so new, I didn’t know what to expect but I’ll be ready this summer.”
His spring highlight was a game against East Georgia College in which he pitched a complete games, allowing just one earned run with seven strikeouts.
The Tigers posted a 22-35 overall record and were 11-21 in conference play.
