Pinewoods Junior Tennis Tournaments

Salisbury's Lyndell Giffenig reached the final of the Girl's-18-and-Under division in a recent USTA CT Championships held at Pinewoods Health and Racquet Club in Torrington.

In one of the largest tournaments ever at Pinewoods with 49 participants, Giffenig won three matches to get to the final. In the first round she defeated Needham, Ma.'s Ali Marie Sullivan, 6-3, 6-3, then topped the number three seed Sarah Baker@in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0. In the semifinals, the 15-year-old outlasted New Canaan's Lexi Milunovich, 6-4, 6-7(7-5), 6-4, in a two and a half hour marathon before falling in the finals, 6-1, 6-0 to Avon's Hannah Dahlem.

Litchfield’s Sabrina Cofer made the finals in an earlier junior tournament at Pinewoods, the Connecticut USTA Championships that had a total of 38 participants.

The 13-year-old won two matches in route to the championship tilt of the Girl's-14-and-Under division. Cofer beat Wilton, Ct.'s Bridget Cott in the first round, 6-0, 6-0, and in the semifinals she came back from a 5-1 deficit in the first set to defeat the number one seed Megan Sosensky, 7-5, 6-4. In the finals, Hebron, Ct's Alexandra Perron was a little too much for the Litchfield eighth grader, winning, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
