AVON - Former Torrington High School Athletic Director, Newell Porch, knew retiring wouldn’t be easy.

After all, when you had spent over 38 years either teaching, coaching or being an AD, it’s tough just to walk away.

In August of 2010, Porch took a job as the Dean of Students and Athletic Director at Nonnewaug, a part-time job which ended December 23. He had left Torrington in June but found he missed being part of the action and was revitalized in Woodbury.

“I just loved my time at Nonnewaug,” Porch said, “It was a temporary position that just ended. When I found out that the Avon job was opening, I was excited and applied.”

Porch was in the top athletic spot for eight years in Torrington after being the assistant AD for seven. He logged a total of 37 years in Torrington and built a well respected athletic department that is still going strong today under Janet Giampaolo.

The Falcons job opened when the current AD, Tanya Adorno, decided to move back to her native Maine in 2011.

Adorno had been on the job since 2009 and spoke to Porch about her plans during a Pequot League football meeting earlier this fall.

Porch was formally introduced to the Avon Board of Education on Tuesday night and was in the gym to watch the Falcons girls basketball team down Ellington by a 61-51 score.

A trip to the auxiliary gym brought Porch to a wrestling match that was also well attended, Falcons fans enjoy and support their athletes.

Porch takes over a program with some of the most cooperative and available coaches in the area, all of whom are coaching quality teams.

Take Frank Waters of the Falcons girls basketball team.

Always ready to take hoops with you, Waters has built a girls program that has seen their share of winning over the years and who are off to a 4-0 start.

Chris Vozzollo, formally an assistant coach at Lewis Mills, is entering his second season at the helm of the Falcons.

Winning basketball programs will be nothing new to Porch, who was AD at THS during the tenure of both Tony Turina (boys until 2008) and Mike Fritch (current girls coach) who put their fair share of teams deep into the States each year, with the boys taking the top prize in 2006.

Much like Dan Dunaj is doing in Torrington, Falcons head football coach, Brett Quinion took a struggling program over and has turned it into a Pequot Uncas powerhouse.

Porch will take over the Adorno contract on January 3 and complete the remaining time, which ends on June 30, 2010.

It will be good to see an old friend in a new place. It's funny how life works.
