Big First Quarter Lifts Highlanders past Cowboys..Story by John Nestor.
LITCHFIELD - John Stevens scored 27 points and Connor Guiheen added 16 to lead the Northwestern boys basketball team to a 90-39 victory over Litchfield on Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams.
Jimi Phillips added 12 points and 14 rebounds and Eric Weingart added 11 points for Northwestern, a semifinalist in Class S last season, which led 38-9 after the first quarter and never looked back.
Stevens scored 14 of his points in the first quarter and Guiheen added 11 as the Highlanders dictated the tempo with their defense and ability to push the ball on the fast break off of misses by the Cowboys.
It was a rough opener for first year Litchfield coach Keith Lipinsky, who got a look at the best team in the league right off the bat.
Freshman Brandon Hookstadt led Litchfield with 10 points.
Saturday figures to be a little more interesting for Northwestern as it will travel to Woodbury for a matchup with Nonnewaug in an early-season BL showdown.
