WHEN: Thursday, 6 p.m.

LOCATION: Jarvis Stadium, Ansonia

2010 RECORDS: Torrington 7-3, Ansonia 11-2 (Class S runner-up)

LAST SEASON: Did not meet

TISCIA'S PICK: Ansonia 41, Torrington 29

Brenden Lytton alone gives the Red Raiders their best shot to beat Ansonia since 1987. The senior, who rushed for 2,360 yards and 29 touchdowns, returns for another go-around and it's a safe bet Torrington will look to get the ball in his hands at least 30 times. However, do not underestimate the loss of three critical parts from last season's 7-3 Red Raiders - Dean Tsopanides, Zach Schebell and Walter Lewis. Replacing them is going to take time and with always-powerhouse Ansonia on the schedule for Week 1, Torrington doesn't have any.

Ansonia, meanwhile, starts life without Montrell Dobbs. On the surface, replacing 3,445 yards and 40 touchdowns seems impossible, but the Chargers have a rising star in sophomore Arkeel Newsome (12 touchdowns), who looks to take the bulk of the carries left behind from Dobbs. Newsome's electric 50-yard touchdown run in the state semifinals last season against Hyde was just a glimpse of his potential.

I wish this game was scheduled about a month into the season because both of these teams have great potential. In Week 1, you usually see a little sloppiness with new players trying to fit in, along with the inevitable four or five cramp delays caused by the warm weather. Neither team will be as good as they will be a month from now.

Picking games in the first week of the season is a coin toss and I'm going with history and homefield.
