When they get together, it seems like only yesterday that they were playing at Mohegan Sun for the Class S title. The smiles are just as wide, the pride just as genuine.

The Thomaston girl’s basketball team got together on Sunday at the business that became “the” place to be during their run earlier this spring.

Former Torrington Raider head basketball coach, Tony Turina, has become a staple in the Thomaston business community with Tony’s Coffee Express.

He knows the players, he knows the coaches and the parents and administrators at the school for that matter.

Hey, he gets them all rolling with a great cup of coffee every morning.

Who better than to throw a party in the teams honor?

Soon after the team came home to a hero’s welcome that Saturday night in mid-March, Turina hatched a plan that would involve coffee and fun. What kid wouldn’t want to be part of that?

Each player was given the chance to pick a flavored coffee and have it named after them.

How special was it to get back together at a place that means so much to each of them?

Maggie Eberhardt summed up her teams feelings.

“It’s great to come here and have the people from Thomaston celebrate with us.” Eberhardt said.   “To be part of this team is something none of us will ever forget.”

This unit played together about as well as any we have seen in years and also get along off the court.

“We see each other in school or on our spring teams.” Eberhardt said. “We all get along real well and will be friends for a long time after school.”

The goal of this day and the rest of the summer until September will be to raise money for the basketball team.

The proceeds from Sunday between 1-2 p.m. went to the Golden Bears as will half the amount collected on any future flavors that are attached to the players.

Eberhardt owns the “French Vanilla” while Abby Hulrburt went with Caramel.

Any time you can step back and remember a tremendous team that caught the imagination of an entire town, it’s a memorable afternoon.

NOTES: Always good to see former Golden Bear star, Sciarra Brandt at Tony’s. Brandt will enter her senior year at Western Connecticut University on the basketball team and has been named co-captain of the 2013-2014 squad along with Chelsea Mone (St Paul, Bristol).
