Nurse named Freshman of Week in AAC while Jefferson makes honor roll.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Fresh off a 51-point victory over SMU in UConn’s 2014-15 conference opener, freshman guard Kia Nurse (Hamilton, Ontario) has been selected as the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week, while junior guard Moriah Jefferson (Glenn Heights, Texas) was named to the conference’s weekly honor roll, as announced by the league on Monday morning.
For Nurse, it marks her second Freshman of the Week accolade after earning the honor on Dec. 1. The guard scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting and dished out a career-best seven assists in UConn’s victory over the Mustangs on Saturday.
Nurse ranks second in The American and 29th in the nation with a 2.53 assist-to-turnover ratio. She is one of six Huskies shooting above 50.0 percent (57.1) and ranks third on the squad with 26.9 minutes per game.
Jefferson received the honor roll nod after delivering a career-high 24 point performance against SMU. The junior point guard connected on 4-of-5 of her attempts from beyond the arc and registered a perfect afternoon (4-of-4) from the free-throw line.
She has started in all 10 of the Huskies’ games and ranks first on the team in total assists (47) and steals (22).
Overall, UConn has won eight-straight contests and boasts a remarkable +36.8 margin of victory.
The Huskies host No. 10 Duke on Monday night at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. on ESPN2.
