TORRINGTON: The Torrington Titans still have a hefty mountain to climb if they want to make their third straight playoff appearance this summer and a win like they got Wednesday night might just be the jumpstart they need for a final push.

Down 3-2 in the ninth inning, the Titans rallied to tie it with an unearned run then won it in the bottom of the tenth on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Kelly that scored John Pastyrnak for a 4-3 win over the Brockton Rox.

Every win from this point on is huge as Torrington tries to work their way out of the basement and into one of six playoff spots that will eventually decide the FCBL 2013 champion.

Torrington improved to 15-23 with the win and are now just a game and a half out of the sixth spot.

The Seacoast Mavericks (18-23) and Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (17-22) are currently in sixth place, nine games out of first.

The Wachusett Dirt Dawgs are in the eighth spot with a 15-22 record, 10 games out of first with Torrington 10 and a half games back with their 15-23 mark.

On a night that they committed five errors, the home team was fortunate to be down just one at 3-2 going to the bottom of the ninth.

Kelly started the ninth inning rally by getting hit by a pitch. He then stole second and tagged up to go to third on a fly ball to left by Bob Seda.

When the relay throw got away from the second baseman, Kelly scampered home with the tying run and the game went to extras.

Chris Hatfield started for Torrington and went six, giving up three runs on six hits.

Connor Landers pitched two scoreless frames, as did closer and 2013 All-Star Alex Disanto who got the win with a scoreless ninth and tenth inning, setting the home team up for a walk-off win in the bottom of the tenth.

Stephen Eldridge led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield and was pinch run for by John Pastyrnak who wasted little time in stealing second base on the very next pitch on a bang-bang play at the bag.

Michael Odenwaelder (3-4, run scored) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with nobody out.

After a strikeout, JJ Gould worked a walk to load the bases with just one out, setting up Kelly who lifted a fly ball to relatively deep left field which allowed Pastyrnak to score the winning run.

The Titans are off Thursday and Friday as the FCBL plays their All-Star Game on Thursday with Disanto, Odenwaelder, Jake McGuiggan and Nick Fuller representing the Titans in Pittsfield.

NOTES: The 2013 playoff format is different than it was in the FCBL’s first two seasons with six teams in the mix.

The top two teams get a bye but then the fun begins.

The third place team plays the sixth place finisher while the fourth plays the fifth.

Here’s where it gets fun.

The first round games will be played at either the one or two seeds ballpark and if you escape with a win in your day game (3-6, 4-5), you play later that night against one of the top seeds.

A day/night doubleheader.

Those teams would then play a best two out of three with the remaining two teams playing another two of three series for the title.
