TORRINGTON: It’s going to be 60 degree’s this weekend so of course it’s high time to cover some college football.

The UConn football team holds it’s Spring Game on Saturday at The Rent and a large crowd is expected, as much to see new head coach Bob Diaco and his new coaching staff as the players on the field.

This Blue-White game takes on a bit more importance this year as the Huskies look to capture the momentum the took out of their three game winning streak at the end of 2013 and re-capture a fan base that just came off a magnificent run on the hardwood.

Right now football is the sport that needs to catch the attention of their fans who are desperate to root for a winner but have lost a great deal of faith at this point.

Sophomore quarterback Casey Cochran will be first on the field on Saturday, you could make the argument that the starting job is his to lose but the second year signal caller needs to play well in any and all situations.

UConn is wrapping up their spring on Saturday after holding 15 practices over a four week period during which reporters and fans have seen spirited and organized drills throughout.

The team look lean, the new coaching staff’s attention to the players eating and nutritional needs seems to be paying off. Adding pounds of muscle while dropping body fat has been the goal and fans will get to see it first hand on Saturday.

Make no mistake about it, everybody is trying out for the starting jobs, up and down the offensive and defensive lines.

It is that offensive line that will be under certain scrutiny after being a major weak spot a year ago.

From this point on, until August, the players will need to hit the weight room and continue their workouts with limited time available for the coaches to work with them.

The Huskies open their 2014 campaign on Friday, August 29 when they host BYU at The Rent.

We will have live reports from East Hartford on Saturday with a story to follow Saturday night.
